FEMA Provides COVID-19 Death Benefits

Under two recently passed federal bills, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is now providing up to $9,000 per COVID-19-related death. Registration for assistance is available through FEMA’s telephone or teletype call center 844-684-6333, Monday – Friday, 9 am – 9 pm Eastern time.

To qualify:

• Applicant must be a U.S. Citizen, non-citizen national, or qualified alien.
• FEMA must be able to verify application’s identity.
• Funeral expenses must be incurred by applicant after January 20, 2020.
• Funeral expenses must not be covered by other sources.
• The death certificate must indicate that COVID-19 played a role in the death.
• The death occurred in the U.S.
• No other applicant has received benefits for the same decedent.

All documents must be presented to FEMA before there is an award. If multiple people contributed to covering the funeral expenses, they must be on the application to receive the award. If a person paid for multiple funeral arrangements, separate applications need to be made for each decedent.
